Why is this course important?
The goal of doing a course like this is to become more culturally aware and more culturally sensitive. One reason this is so important in the context of music care, is because when we're talking about music care we are bringing music to the patient of the care experience. Music is always a product of culture. Music is inseparable from culture. For many people, music is the most important or one of the most important cultural elements that they connect with and identify with throughout their life.In this course we are going to deepen our understanding of the complex interplay that can exist between culture, music and identity, both in groups and in individual people.
After this course students will be prepared to:
- Develop and grow our skills and understanding of cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, & cultural humility.
- Identify and reflect on your own cultural background and influences and how this has shaped one’s own world view and perspectives.
- Understand that culture is an incredibly complex and important concept to consider in the caregiving environment

About Aaron Lightstone, MMT, RP, MTA, NMT-F
Aaron is an award-winning composer, musician, music therapist, music producer, psychotherapist, rehabilitation professional, and educator. He is best known as the founder and band leader of 2X Juno nominated Jaffa Road and as the founder / clinical director of his busy clinical practice, Music Therapy Toronto, which specializes in the rehabilitation of neurologic injury and disease. He is also the music director of the Bliss iBand, a community music group for persons with complex physical disabilities resulting from cerebral palsy.
Aaron has always pursued interest and studies in the music of many different cultures. His master’s thesis studied the ethnomusicology and therapeutic impact of Hip Hop with homeless youth. His recent work as a producer was featured in the OSCAR nominated film THE BREADWINNER and won Best Song at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards.
